Belfast gets its name from the Irish Beal Feirste, or mouth of the Farset. Whilst the River Farest has long disappeared under the streets of Belfast, the River Lagan is now the most important River in Belfast. The River Lagan once formed part of the Lagan Navigation a 27mile navigation extending from Belfast to Lough Neagh and was once one of the most successful commercial navigation in Ireland, but was closed in 1958. The impoundment of the River Lagan by the Lagan Weir in 1994 lead to the rejuvenation of Belfast and whilst the banks of the River Lagan may look very different today, a lot of the history still remains. Belfast Shore Excursion: Giant's Causeway and Belfast Tour

Belfast Shore Excursion: Giant's Causeway and Belfast Tour

The tour begins with a scenic drive through the Glens of Antrim to the North Coast of Ireland. It is truly breathtaking with rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, and wonderful views of Scotland. Ample time is given at the incredible Giant's Causeway, a famous World Heritage Site. It is a 20-minute walk from the drop-off point to the Causeway site or a shuttle bus operates for a small charge. The hexagonal basalt rocks really look like they were manmade, and this leads the people in Ireland to believe they were carved by Ireland's most famous Giant Warrior, the great Finn MacCoole. Stop for one of the most impressive photo opportunities in Ireland, the magnificent Dunluce Castle. Part of this impressive ruin crumbled into the sea in the 1600s. This castle is connected to the mainland by a bridge and was once the stronghold of the McDonnell clan. In the afternoon you return to Belfast City for a sightseeing tour that takes in the highlights of this vibrant city, including City Hall, the River Lagan, Queens University, St Anne's cathedral, and Prince Albert memorial Clock.

Join our experienced and qualified tour guide. Belfast is Ireland's second city. Steeped in rich history and vibrant heritage. Situated on the banks of the River Lagan, its roots trace back to the early 17th century, transformed into a major industrial hub in the 19th century. The city's strategic location and bustling port enabled it to become a key player in global shipbuilding, RMS Titanic being built in its shipyards. The Industrial Revolution brought prosperity to Belfast, but it also left a complex legacy of poverty, sectarianism and conflict. This history is still visible in the form of murals and peace walls that tell stories of the community struggles and resilience. Today, Belfast has evolved into a dynamic cultural hub. Known for its warm hospitality and lively pubs, where traditional music and conversation flow freely. As a destination, it invites travellers to explore a fascinating blend of old & new, where heritage and progress are woven together in a unique urban tapestry. Show less
