Your bohemian tour of Rio will start with your guide meeting your group to escort you personally via the efficient (and safe) metro system to the very center of Rio, Carioca Square. Once there, your guide lead you on an excursion that will show you the Real Santa Teresa, one of Rio’s most beloved neighborhoods.
After a quick stop at Carioca Square, you’ll head through the financial district towards the 100 year old tram that will take you up the steep hill to Santa Teresa, the boho-chic focal point of your tour. To get there, you’ll ride past the Lapa neighborhood of Rio, home to an aqueduct dating back to the 18th century but now one of Rio’s most sizzling areas for nightlife.
You’ll depart the tram at Largo dos Guimaraes, the main stop for the Santa Teresa neighborhood. Your guide will take you into the colonial neighborhood that is in the midst of renaissance, as more and more artists move in. Formerly dilapidated, the cobblestone streets and 18th century architecture now house fine restaurants, fabulous lounges and eclectic art galleries.
Your Santa Teresa tour will also visit the Parque das Ruínas (the Park of Ruins), which was home to one of Rio’s greatest patron of the arts, Laurinda Santos Lobo. Her mansion, built in 1907, was where she held great gatherings of Rio’s leading artists and intellectuals right up until her death in 1946. From her mansion, you will take in one of the most spectacular views in all of Rio (and there are many!) that will show you the entire city from downtown to Guanabara Bay.
As your tour of Rio continues along those historic streets, you’ll stop by Escadaria Selarón (Selarón’s Steps), famous for its tiles that were collected from cities all over the world by artists Jorge Selarón. Begun in 1990, there are now more than 250 tiles on the steps, representing more than 60 different countries. The steps have been featured in countless productions, from The Amazing Race and National Geographic to Pharrell’s “Happy” video. You’ll get a glimpse into the luminaries life, as his house is located right at the foot of the steps, where he sadly passed away in 2013.
Your group will them make its way to the Cinelândia square, home to the city’s architectural masterpiece, the Municipal Theater. The lavish theater is considered to be Rio’s most beautiful and important theater, inspired by Paris’ legendary opera house. Today it is still in use as home to the Brazilian Symphonic Orchestra.
