Overview
Discover 3 of Latvia’s outstanding palaces and a castle on a day trip from Riga. The journey back through history takes you to ancient Semigallian strongholds and picturesque scenery in 1 of the 4 cultural and historic regions of Latvia.
What to Expect
This full day tour from Riga transports you back in time to visit the ancient region of Zemgale in southern central Latvia. Departing from a convenient city location in Riga, you will drive to the former strongholds of the Semigallians, located in the flat land of the Lielupe River basin.

You will visit two palaces and one castle, including Bauska Castle, considered Latvia’s finest monument, on the outskirts of the city of Bauska.

Nestled on a narrow peninsula at the confluence of the Mūsa and Mēmele Rivers, the Bauska Castle complex consists of a mid-15th-Century castle of the Livonian Order, now in ruins, and the former palace of the Dukes of Courland. Built in the late 16th-Century, the palace has been fully restored and boasts beautiful views from the top of its castle keep.

Next you will visit Mežotne Palace, a handsome residence in the former Semigallian stronghold of Mežotne. The municipality dates back more than 1,000 years, but the classical Italianate Mežotne Manor belongs to the 17th-Century era of Duke Jacob and features gorgeous English style gardens.

Rundāle Palace is an exceptional monument full of Baroque and Rococo art. Built in the mid 18th-Century by the Russian court architect Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli, it was the summer residence of the Duke of Courland. The two-story castle contains 138 elaborate rooms, a lovely French garden and a museum dedicated to the history of Latvia.

You will have the services of a knowledgeable guide throughout this 7-hour excursion, helping you to better understand the ancient culture of Latvia and hear tales of Zemgale’s long and fascinating history.
