We had a fantastic day trip into Gauja National Park including a highly informative visit at the Turaida museum reserve. First we had a nice trail hike/walk through the beautiful naturally reserved forest of Gauja National Park, enjoying stunning views into the Gauja Valley and on the well restored medieval castles. Our Guide Rolands was "human encyclopedia", highly knowledgeable and a skilled story teller. We enjoyed this walk so much. After Lunch break with traditional home made Latvian food we went with the Cable Car to Krimula manor house, which comprises in fact very a small village (the area were the Manor and his servants used to live). The village is still inhabited today and thus serves as an "inhabited museum". Finally we visited the Turaida museum reserve, which is a heritage site with a medieval castle, a 1700s wooden church & a park with folk-song sculptures. We also learned about the specifics of a traditional Latvian Sauna, which follows a 500-year old procedure.
Even though it was pouring almost the whole day, we had an excelent experiencia guided by our guide Richards, who gave us a "poncho" and guided us through the different attractions of Sigulda (castles, parks, cave, etc.). He told us a lot of stories and legends about Latvia and he was very patient to answer all our doubts and he also offered to take us a lot of photos.
Our guide (Rolands) was perfect and this tour was a brilliant way to get to know Gauja. We hiked through beautiful forests and wooded meadows, with plenty of chances to take photos and admire the view. We had a tasty lunch in Sigulda before visiting the stunning Turaida. The pick- up and journey was easy and the timings perfect. Highly recommend.
We enjoyed our excursion tremendously - lots of scenic views and sights along the hike. We explored everything from castles to caves to ruins. Richard, our guide, was knowledgeable, personable and a joy to spend 7 hrs with. Would definitely recommend if you're looking for something different during your stay in Latvia.
Eva was the best guide we have ever had! She was funny, nice and told us everything we wanted to know. It seems like she was one of our local friends. She was so GREAT! tamara and the group of yesterday
