Riga’s Jewish Heritage: A 2-Hour Walking Tour

In this guided Group tour You will get information about the Jewish history in Latvia from 17th century till now. The tour includes visits to the Old Choral Synagogue, the former ghetto territory and the old Jewish cemetery. It was a part of the Jewish ghetto during Nazi occupation. When the war ended and the Soviets took over it was turned into a park. Today the only evidence of its original purpose is a large stone with the Star of David. You will have the opportunity to visit Peitav Shul, the only working synagogue in Latvia. Built in 1905, it is the only surviving Jewish prayer house and the main meeting place for the 7,000 – strong community. It’s sacred scrolls and other treasures were hidden and escaped destruction. It was not burnt down during the Holocaust due to its close proximity to other houses in Old Riga.

There is much to see and learn on this tour, not only about Jewish heritage. My guide, Gunta, was friendly, extremely knowledgeable, and was clearly engaged by her own subject. Which engaged me. Gunta also responded to questions about Riga that were outside the subject of the tour. Her recounting her time under Soviet occupation was fascinating. I didn’t feel like I was listening to a script, which sometimes happens on tours. It felt like I was walking with a friend who had great knowledge of the place she lives. It One of the best tours I’ve ever taken. Thank you!

Gunta was very helpful answered questions and showed me what we needed to see. Unfortunately, for me, the Holocaust Museum and the synagogue were closed for a holiday. Fortunately, for me, I was able to go at another time to both locations and they were amazing. The tour covered the highlights in the lowlight of Jewish life in Riga. I walked away with a great understanding of what life must’ve been like in the early 1940s. I also realize you could never know what life is like until you’ve experienced it. Thank you for a great tour.

Very good and competent guide, she has made the history of the Jews from the Middle Ages to after the 2nd World War interesting, unfortunately there is little to see in the city, but a lively picture has been drawn with the stories told.

Great tour. The guide was very knowledgeable and it was easy to discuss the history with her. Also, it was not just history but the current situation

A lovely lady with lots of local and Jewish knowledge. It was a very hot day and a very long walk, not for the faint hearted.
