Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park

This excursion takes place in Parque Natural da Ribeira dos Caldeirões, one of the most extraordinary parks in the northeastern part of the island of São Miguel (+/- 45 minute drive away from the city of Ponta Delgada). Upon arrival, we will proceed with the distribution of your personal equipment and then set off on short walk of ~ 15min to our first stop where we will have our first safety briefing. We will then continue on a short scramble uphill where we will then stop for our second safety briefing, where we will show you how to rappel before continuing onwards and upwards for another ~10min to the start of the canyon where the fun will begin! The Canyoning Experience: After reaching the top of the canyon you will start the second part of your adventure. You can expect several jumps (between 2 and 7 meters in height, all optional), a natural slide and some abseils (between 5 and 15m in height). We will walk back along our initial path to the starting point. Note: – The exact itinerary including jumps, abseils and other techniques will depend on local conditions and seasons. The terrain, landscape and flow of the stream normally change throughout the year. – If you feel uncomfortable, there are different alternatives for every obstacle.

1st Full Day tour to Furnas & Nordeste. (8 hours tour)) 2nd Full Day tour to Sete Cidades & Lagoa do Fogo. (8 hours tour) *The order of days tours may be changed. On the day of Furnas & Nordeste tour, we will have the opportunity to lunch the famous “Furnas Stew”, cooked in volcanic soil for 6 hours and also have the opportunity to see taking out our pot from the interior of the volcanic soil, and all the volcanic manifestations existing there. On the day of Sete Cidades & Lagoa do Fogo tour, lunch will be served as a “Buffet” with different meat and fish dishes. (Full lunch on both of 2 days of activities with starters, drinks, dessert and coffee can be added to your tour when booking) In these 2 days of activitiest, you will have the privilege of having a general view of the most iconic places of the entire “green” island, from which stand out the emblematic viewpoints such as Vista do Rei in Sete Cidades, (winner of the 7 Wonders of Portugal ) or Pico do Ferro, where you can see from the top of the crater one of the most active volcanoes in the Azores archipelago and learn all about its eruptive history with more than 100,000 years. You will also have the opportunity to relax in hot thermal pools, heated by Furnas volcano, at one of the biggest and best Botanical Parks in Europe, Terra Nostra Park. Also the visit to Pineapple and Tea Plantations will be a “must”. In the Northeast area, we will visit the Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park with its 5 water mills and its imposing and majestic waterfall, entitled “Véu da Noiva”.

Explore the highlights of the eastern half of São Miguel island on a guided tour by van. Discover the hot springs at Furnas, the waterfall at Ribeira dos Caldeirões, as well as the remote rugged beauty of the Nordeste region. Enjoy the beautiful scenery along the northern coast of the island until you get to the Santa Iria Lookout, with a spectacular, ample view of the north coast in both directions, before continuing to Furnas. Visit two amazing lookouts over the high cliffs that characterize the East coast of São Miguel, before returning to Ponta Delgada.

Discover the diverse green vegetation, clear and fresh waterfalls and old water mills on this adventurous canyoning tour through the forest. Unless you choose the option with pickup from Ponta Delgada, your adventure starts at Parque Natural da Ribeira dos Caldeirões, one of the most popular natural areas in the Nordeste region.  The activity starts with you picking up your safety equipment, followed by a short walk of about 20 minutes. Once at the entry point to the stream, listen to a safety briefing.  Along the route there will be vertical challenges at waterfalls, which you will combat with the technique of abseiling. On the East side Tour, discover Furnas volcano & Nordeste starting with a morning stop at one of the most beautiful viewpoints on the north coast of São Miguel, Santa Iria. Enjoy a tea tasting by visiting one of the only two industrial tea factories in Europe. Admire all the beauty of the tea plantation, traveling through valleys and mountains where goats clean the bushes. This is not just any plantation, it is the last one in the world where no pesticides or fertilizers are used, being 100% natural. Head to the "Parque Natural da Ribeira dos Caldeirões" in Nordeste, here, the nature lives! An old water mill park converted into a Natural Park of great beauty with its enormous waterfalls. "Pico do Ferro" Viewpoint is our next spot to discover what awaits you by admiring the magnificent panoramic view of the interior of the Furnas volcano crater. Visit the famous "Parque das Caldeiras" close to the lake and learn how the locals cook, using holes in the ground heated by volcanic heat. Take advantage of this break at Lagoa das Furnas, for lunch (Option Book Lunch). Explore the place locally called "Mouth of the Volcano" where you will find hot spring, countless sources of mineral waters and stroll among boiling waters. The last stop will be in Vila Franca do Campo, which was the first capital of São Miguel, before its destruction in 1522.

Start the tour by leaving Ponta Delgada and traveling towards the north coast. Make the first stop at Ribeira dos Caldeirões in the municipality of Nordeste. See the beautiful waterfall, known as Véu da Noiva, and the surrounding watermills and gardens. Pass through picturesque villages as you travel on towards the wonderful viewpoints of Ponta do Sossego and Ponta da Madrugada, on the eastern tip of the island. View the beautiful lighthouse from the top of the cliff. Stop for lunch which will be served in the village of Povoação, the oldest settlement on the island. In the afternoon, relax near the sea or explore the historic center of Povoação. Return to Ponta Delgada along the south coast, passing by Furnas Lake and Vila Franca do Campo.

In addition, there are several opportunities to buy food or snacks during the tour.
