Landmannalaugar, together with Hekla, an active volcano in its neighborhood, is one of Iceland's most unique destinations and a must for all who love to explore the beauty of nature. Discover one of the most active geothermal areas flanked by rhyolite mountains and steaming hot springs.
Start the day with lunch and set off on a 4-hour hike through the sprawling lava fields of Laugahraun, Vondugil Canyon and up to the summit of the colorful mountain of Brennisteinsalda with its steaming vents and Sulphur deposits.
Descend through the Grænagil canyon, carved as a result of geodynamic activity of mountains, volcanoes and glacial rivers. If time and weather conditions allow, climb Bláhnúkur, a circa 60,000-year-old volcano with panoramic views of the Landmannalaugar Valley.
Have a bath in a natural hot pool, where both hot and cold water flow out from beneath Laugahraun, mixing together and forming the perfect bathing conditions. Remember to take your swimwear and a towel with you.
If you choose to travel in your own car, join your guide in front of the Landmannalaugar Wardens' Hut. There are 3 routes to Landmannalaugar from the Ring Road. If you have a small 4-wheel drive, leave your vehicle about 1 kilometer outside Landmannalaugar as the river fording here is to hazardous for small cars. Two-wheel drive car rentals are not allowed to drive on F roads. There is no petrol station at Landmannalaugar. The nearest petrol pumps are 40 kilometers north at Hrauneyjar. F208 Northwest: You can follow the west side of the Þjorsá (Rte 32), passing Árnes and then north. This is the easiest path to follow for small 4-wheel drives. After passing the power plant, the road from Hrauneyjar becomes very bumpy and swerves in between the power lines all the way to the “Ugly Puddle” / Ljótipollur Lake. F225: On the east side of the Þorsá, follow Rte 26 inland and pass through the low plains behind Hel.
