I did not know what to expect from this experience, but I thoroughly enjoyed myself: I liked the fact that we not only did this activity but bookended the day with a visit to both Skogafoss waterfall (MY FAVOURITE PLACE ON EARTH) and Seljandsfoss waterfall. Those were some nice surprises (I didn't know those stops were a part of the package!). I always rent a car when I'm in Iceland but I did enjoy being driven around for a day (was a nice break). The van was super comfortable and I met some lovely people - one of whom I will probably be traveling back to Iceland with next year (I'm from Canada, she's from Germany)! I suggest bringing hiking boots for this adventure - crampons are good for most any shoe but you are on a glacier for part of this experience and so it's better to have the stability of a good boot than not.

The short-term booking the evening before worked without any problems. Actually we should have been four, but since the other two didn't show up and the guide didn't reach them by phone, we set off after a 10-minute wait. The tour with the super jeep was great and the visit to the ice cave was also very exciting and fascinating. The guide stayed in the background and let us explore the cave himself, but was available for questions and further information at any time. So you could let everything around you work optimally. Behind the cave we met another group from another tour - there were twelve of them and that's mM too much. Even if it is always a matter of luck with these tours, how much exactly the same tour booked. The guide let us all the time, we could decide where and how long we spend.

This excursion was by far the highlight of our trip to Iceland. It was breathtakingly beautiful seeing the natural ice caves and hiking though the glaciers. I was travelling with two friends and we were all in awe after our experience and had a moment of reflection when we reached the top and were taking in the amazing panoramic views. Waterproof hiking/snow boots, gloves, clothing is definitely reccomended. We were picked up from Bus stop 9, Laugavegur, Reykjavik and travelled to Vik with a coach which was about 3 hour drive. We stopped for toilet breaks and lunch break and then were picked up in a jeep from Vik to go to Katla Ice Caves. The guide was very informative and had a good sense of humour. We were provided with ice crampons, helmet and torchlights. I used my Samsung S10 for pictures and my GoPro to video the whole experience. I would reccomend taking DSLR to get the best quality pics. We arrived back to Reykjavik for 8.40pm making it in time for Northern Lights Tour 9.30pm.
