Day 1: Grand South Coast and Northern Lights
Following a pick-up from your accommodation in Reykjavik, depart to see thundering waterfalls, endless rolling valleys, beautiful black beaches, extraordinary glaciers, and small villages surrounded by unique landscapes. Venture down the south coast of Iceland on the scenic and secluded Route 1, scene of the massive eruption of Eyjafjallajokull that halted all European air travel in 2010. Explore 2 of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world at Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss. On a clear day, get views of the surrounding glaciers of Eyjafjallajökull and Myrdalsjokull.
Continue to the coastal village of Vik to marvel at the black sand beach of Reynisfjara. Get views of the picturesque basalt column formations and famous Reynisdrangar peaks. Pass vast lava fields covered by fluffy moss and the endless surrounding mountain range. Head deeper into the countryside, and enjoy a relaxing evening at your overnight accommodation to recharge for the following day. When night falls hunt for the dancing Northern Lights, often clearer away from the bright city lights.
Day 2: Land of Ice
Today you will visit ice caves and glaciers, starting early in the morning to visit the infamous Jokulsarlon Ice Lagoon. Admire the massive floating icebergs, and the setting for 2 James Bond movies (“A View to a Kill” and “Die Another Day”). Discover a land of ice and fire, and view the numerous glacier outlets of Vatnajokull, Europe’s largest glacier.
Next, look inside an ice cave, where a certified guide will ensure that you are safe at all times on the exciting experience. Only found during the winter time, when the glacial rivers retract and the water freezes, the ice caves form in different locations each year, but always provide unparalleled photo opportunities. Capture the blue light passing through the ice, before heading back towards the Skaftafell Nature Reserve, part of the Vatnajokull National Park. Surrounded by jagged mountains and glacier topped peeks, the scenery consists of unique features that make it a definite highlight of the tour. At the end of your Skaftafell exploration, make your way back to Reykjavik, keeping an eye out for the Northern Lights along the way.
