With a tumultuous history dating back several centuries, the city’s strategic location made it a hub for trade by sea and subsequently a landing point for the island’s colonial rulers. A fort was built to ensure the protection and preservation of the city of the Portuguese in the early 16th Century and then extensively fortified by the Dutch during the 17th century. Originally the fort was an earthen structure with palisades, a rampart, three bastions, and a moat surrounding it. Under the control of the Dutch, they built impregnable fortifications with coral and granite stones and the Fort resembled a small laid-out walled town with a rectangular grid pattern of streets full of low houses with gables and verandas. Turtle conservation centre. The five species of marine turtles nesting in Sri Lanka include the green turtle, the leatherback, the hawksbill, the loggerhead, and the Ridley. Established to protect turtles that nest on Sri Lankan beaches from extinction, the marine turtle hatcheries are operated by the Wildlife Protection Society of Sri Lanka and rely on volunteers to help with their conservation project. An incredible tour through the rainforest. A very friendly and courteous driver took us to the Sinharaja Rainforest. The tour guide gave us a truly fantastic experience. He was extremely knowledgeable about the rainforest, showed us impressive animals up close, and worked hard the entire time to ensure it was an unforgettable experience for us. At the end of the tour, you can take a dip in a crystal-clear waterfall, which was a welcome way to cool off. We highly recommend the tour!

Tour was as advertised. The driver was very good and patient as our youngest son suffered a little on the way there with travel sickness. The transport was comfortable and we were given water and peanuts. The Rainforest guide was good at helping to point out wildlife and offered to take photos from up close. We were taken to the waterfall to swim and given a lovely lunch prepared by our guides wife.

Amazing tour with very knowledgeable and kind guide who walked us through the rainforest from the Pitadenya entrance to the Kekuna Ella waterfall and back. Trip was very convenient - we were picked up from our hotel in Unawatuna at reasonable hour (8am), travelled comfortably to the park and then went back home with the same comfort. Left at 8am, came back at 6pm. Highly recommended tour!
