Full description
Warasa Garifuna Drum School welcomes you to the perfect activity to finish a fun day in southern Belize!

The Garifuna people are descendants of shipwrecked Africans who mixed with indigenous Arawak and Carib Amerindians on the Caribbean island of St. Vincent in the 17th century.

They settled in Belize in the 19th century after being forced from St. Vincent by the British. Never enslaved, the Garifuna have a proud and rich history and culture.

Come and see one of Belize's best traditional Garifuna groups perform just for you under our beautiful thatch palapa on the edge of Punta Gorda town.  After they have finished their one hour performance, then join them with some dance moves or try to learn one or two beats on the drums.  Finally, relax yourself while surrounding by the sounds of the jungle in the evening while enjoying a plate of "hudut" - a traditional Garifuna dish of fresh local fish fillet sauteed in hand-made coconut milk with mild spices, served with mashed plantain.

Warasa's members are all family and friends and have been playing together for many years - Mario McDonald's mahogany drums are over 40 years old, and Ronald, the founder of the drum school, has been playing drums since he was 5 years old.  They will make your group feel at home, and answer all your questions about the fascinating Garifuna culture.
