Etna: Guided Climbing Tour to Summit Craters

Climb up Mount Etna and tour its summit craters with a guide. Take in rewarding views as you reach the top.
After a briefing at the mobile information point, your excursion will start, up to the top of Mount. Etna at 3,300 meters. Take the cable car to quickly gain altitude up to 2,500 meters and then with special 4x4 minibusses, go up to 2,900 meters, near Torre del Filosofo. During the 2-hour ascent, take 2-3 intermediate breaks to enjoy the view. Travel through the lunar-looking lava fields that will lead you under the summit craters.
With a final demanding climb, reach the summit of Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe. Admire the peculiarities that characterize the summit area. Descend on foot to the upper station of the cable car that will take you back to the starting point.

Explore Etna Park on a 6-hour tour that takes you up to the Sapienza Refuge at 1,986 meters. Return transfers from your accommodation in Catania are included in the package. At the Sapienza Refuge you’ll see both the newest eruptions of the volcano and the old Silvestri craters, dating from the 1892 eruption. Afterwards you’ll trek along a nature path through Etna Park, enjoying breathtaking views over the Bove Valley. Enter a lava cave, with a helmet and head lamp, to learn how lava flows are formed. Later, stop in the town of Zafferana, on the eastern side of Etna. In Zafferana, known as the town of honey, you’ll visit one of the most famous organic farms in the area to taste delicious local products such as honey, olive oil, and wine. You’ll be transferred to your hotel in the early afternoon.

The half-day excursion includes an easy walk to the impressive Monte Fontana and a visit of the famous valley Valle del Bove. Wander through old and new lava flows, walk on extinct craters, and visit a real lava cave equipped with helmets and flashlights, where ice was produced centuries ago. Your guide will show you the great variety of flora and fauna here - plants and animals which populate the active volcano. While walking through ancient forests you will learn a lot about the vegetation and the wildlife of Mount Etna. Your last stop of the half-day tour will be around the cold lava streams of Piano Provenzana, which were destroyed during the last big eruption in 2002. At the end of the tour you will be driven back to your accommodation. Altogether this will be an unforgettable experience.

Make use of the free pick-up service at around 10:30 am, where you will be picked up from your hotel in Catania or the surrounding areas. Once you have arrived at the farm, visit the orange plantation. Walk inside and learn about the different kinds of citrus and production techniques, as well as various treatments from irrigation to collection, from the skilled staff. In addition, after this relaxing walk, visit the orchards, where you can stroll inside the park, full of typical Mediterranean plants out in the open air. Then, visit the palmento (millstone), located inside the patriarchal villa of the farm, with a sommelier. Learn the story behind the production of each bottle of wine, from the time of the pruning, to the vendemmia or harvest, through to the fermentation and aging.
