Visit the Orlík Chateau, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, and marvel at the vast Baroque complex at Svata Hora near Příbram. Learn about the history of the famous 16th-century chapel and the traditions surrounding it on a private tour from Prague.
What to Expect
You’ll be picked up at your Prague hotel for the hour-long drive through the scenic central Bohemian countryside en route to the Orlík Chateau.
The stone castle was built by the order of Emperor Charles IV. The original royal property served as a customs office and tolls of the ships passing through. In 1802 the property was divided between 2 brothers, and Karel Filip became the first permanent resident of the castle. The chateau was renovated and transformed in the second half of the 19th century.
After a short drive you’ll stop for lunch at a restaurant, where you’ll have a chance to enjoy local Czech cuisine.
Continue on to the important Baroque complex of Svata Hora of Pribrami. The founding of the area is not clear and remains shrouded by myths and legends. It is also unknown when the original chapel was built but the famous Czech historian, Bohuslav Balbin, who specialized in the history of Svata Hora, dated the founding of the chapel to the 16th century.
Processions have been part of tradition here since the 16th century, and were held even during the times of protestant leaders.
You’ll see the stunning work of painters, sculptors, plasterers, and craftsmen, and their achievements were another reason why pilgrims were attracted to this particular site.
Renovations continue, with the most extensive occurring in 1988, when a new marble floor was installed, and the famous Silver Altar was refurbished.
