Full description
The tour starts with a visit to the birthplace of the Portuguese nation – the city of Guimarães. This was the first city of Portugal chosen by the first king, Afonso Henriques. Known as the cradle of Portugal, Guimarães has preserved a medieval atmosphere at its core and is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your first stop takes place in the northern part of the city with a visit to the imposing 10th century castle and the majestic Dukes of Bragança Palace. Afterward the historical Santa Maria Road leads you to the charming square in the heart of the old town, Largo da Oliveira. After a relaxing lunch break in Guimarães that will certainly allow you to enjoy the pleasures of the cuisine of the north of Portugal, it will be time to continue towards Braga, the oldest religious capital of Portugal. Known to the Romans as Bracara Augusta, for centuries Braga has been and archiepiscopal seat and pilgrimage site. Your first stop is Sé, the 12th century cathedral built by Henri de Bourgogne and Dona Teresa. Then you will head to Bom Jesus Sanctuary, a hilltop pilgrimage site. The 581 steps that the pilgrims climb up to the top of Bom Jesus are one of the most glorious stairways in Portugal. After a visit to these landmarks of faith in the country you head back to Porto.

What a terrific tour of an area I knew little about. We had an outstanding professional guide in Violeta who combined immense historical knowledge with very good logistical and communications skills. I also appreciated the flexibility of the tour company to pick us up at our hotel instead of some hard to find place in Porto. I highly recommend both the tour and great guide, Violeta. Well worth our time and money.

Superb guide, superb day, thank you Cool Tours

We had the most amazing day with a totally excellent guide who was so knowledgable and friendly, we wanted for nothing. We had a lovely meal in a restaurant in Braga and our guide explained what all the local food was. We loved both Braga and Guimaeres and had plenty of time to enjoy both. The whole day was just so enjoyable and so much to see in both towns. Can thoroughly recommend this tour company, don't hesitate to book with them, You will not be disappointed.

I enjoyed my trip to Braga and Guimaraes very much! Our tour guide, Violet, was very friendly and knowledgeable on the history of each area. She answered our questions in detail and made our tour go smoothly. We visited the city of Braga first And saw their beautiful Cathedral and then went to Bom Jesus do Monte, which was lovely. After breaking for a traditional Portuguese lunch. We then spent the afternoon in Guimaraes. We walked thru the town and stopped at the castle , church and a royal residence, among other sites. The day was very enjoyable! I highly recommend this tour!
