Full description
The tour starts with a visit to the birthplace of the Portuguese nation – the city of Guimarães. This was the first city of Portugal chosen by the first king, Afonso Henriques. Known as the cradle of Portugal, Guimarães has preserved a medieval atmosphere at its core and is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your first stop takes place in the northern part of the city with a visit to the imposing 10th century castle. Afterward the historical Santa Maria Road leads you to the charming square in the heart of the old town, Largo da Oliveira. After a relaxing lunch break in Guimarães that will certainly allow you to enjoy the pleasures of the cuisine of the north of Portugal, it will be time to continue towards Braga, the oldest religious capital of Portugal. Known to the Romans as Bracara Augusta, for centuries Braga has been and archiepiscopal seat and pilgrimage site. Your first stop is Sé, the 12th century cathedral built by Henri de Bourgogne and Dona Teresa. Then you will head to Bom Jesus Sanctuary, a hilltop pilgrimage site. The 581 steps that the pilgrims climb up to the top of Bom Jesus are one of the most glorious stairways in Portugal. After a visit to these landmarks of faith in the country you head back to Porto.

Wow this was an amazing tour, even though it rained for most of it our guide Pedro made it a great day! It’s very well paced, not tiring at all. We got to learn A LOT about the history of both cities. The lunch spot was so delicious and we got to try their local green wine. One of the best tours we’ve been on this entire trip, the small size really allows you to connect with your guide and ask as many questions as you want! Pedro is very knowledgeable and funny, we had such a great time with the other couple that was on the trip!

Despite the bad weather, we had a great day. The visit was carried out in a very small group (5 people + the guide), practically a private visit. We were able to see the main tourist attractions in both cities with some free time at times. The lunch meal was excellent. If you have more time, the ideal is to devote 1 day to each city. A combined tour like this gives you a good overview of both cities. I recommend this excursion.

João, the guide, is an endless well of historical knowledge, not just of the cities we visited, but of the entire country. He managed to contextualize the milestones of our trip with the various lines that outline the history of Portugal, from the Celts, the Romans, the "barbarian invasions", Islamic Iberia and so on. He knew how to expose the moment in which the country took on its identity and went through historical milestones such as the Battle of Aljubarrota, the era of great navigation, the Napoleonic wars, the change of the kingdom's capital to Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, with the return from Pedro IV to Portugal, the civil war, the Republic, the new state... There is so much information associated with physical monuments that it is impossible not to be awake and attentive all the time. A delight for anyone who loves understanding the history behind art and such majestic monuments.
