Trinidad: Pitch Lake and Chaguanas Sightseeing Tour

1. Trinidad: Pitch Lake and Chaguanas Sightseeing Tour

Journey to Central Trinidad to marvel at the sticky tar of Pitch Lake, shop at the lively markets of Chaguanas, and admire the many Hindu temples indicative of the region's East Indian population. This tour gives you a chance to learn more about the heart of Trinidad as you explore its communities. After being picked up from your hotel, you will travel through Central Trinidad's flat plains and rolling hills. Take in the country life as you pass through island villages, and stop for a drink or some fresh fruit from a local stand before you arrive in Chaguanas and get the chance to visit a bustling produce market and lively bazaar. At the local temple complex, you will get to encounter the towering statue of the Hindu god Hanuman, the largest outside of India. The bright and eccentric pink color of the temple itself reminds many of a wedding cake. Many Hindu temples and prayer flags can be spotted in the region, thanks to Central Trinidad's large East Indian population. You will receive some suggestions for lunch and some free time before you head onward to Pitch Lake. The surreal surface of the lake appears like elephant skin, but is actually the largest natural deposit of asphalt in the world. Explore with your guide as you learn about the sticky tar lake, which is said to be nearly 250 feet (75 meters) deep. After this unique natural experience, you will be transported back to your accommodation in Port of Spain.

Port of Spain: Matura Beach Turtle Migration Observation

4. Port of Spain: Matura Beach Turtle Migration Observation

Depart Port of Spain in the early evening following a pickup from your hotel. Head east through several villages before you reach Matura Beach on Trinidad's eastern coast. Here you’ll meet a small group of local experts on the egg-laying season that will guide you to the beach to view the turtles nesting under moonlight. The leatherback sea turtles can weigh up to 1,500 pounds (680 kg) and measure nearly 10 feet (3 meters) across. You’ll witness the end of a journey that has taken them across the Atlantic Ocean, as the female turtle returns to the beach she was born on to spend over 2 hours laying her eggs. Biologists believe that these creatures — and this migratory process — have seen relatively little change in almost 150 million years. If you're lucky, you may see a baby turtle hatch and crawl its way into the ocean, and often there are multiple turtles laying eggs at the same time. Each nest contains almost 80 eggs, but typically only 2-3 turtles survive per nest. At the end of the evening, make your way back to Port of Spain, with a drop-off around midnight.

What people are saying about Port of Spain

Excellent. The best guide we had until now

He prepared for the visit two weeks beforehand asking us about our preferences, interests and plans for the tour. He addressed in a highly qualified manner all our answers and more importantly, we learnt to know that our guide is one exceptional person. His experience is impressive. We enjoyed the tour a lot and he provided to us also very useful recommendations.

Great 8-hour tour of three of Trinidad’s popular beaches! I highly recommend this private tour with Khalid.
