Scenic Port Elizabeth, affectionately known as the "Friendly City," may be Africa's carefree water sports capital today, but a visit to Fort Frederick shows how the garrison once provided crucial protection for British colonists against raids by French marauders from the harbor during the Napoleonic Wars.

With a history stretching through the founding of Cape Colony by the Dutch East India Company, back to early European visitors such as Bartholomew Dias and Vasco de Gama, back even further to the ancients who first inhabited the area roughly 100,000 years ago, Port Elizabeth is steeped in culture and rich heritage.

Tourists from all over the world appreciate the depth and variety of day trips beginning in Port Elizabeth, from short, half-day jaunts to multiple day tours.

One can visit the townships to get a true sense of contemporary South African life, enjoy the cuisine and get friendly with the residents and legendary folk artists as they welcome you into their homes, treating you like royalty deserving the joyful local hospitality.

Devote a full day to an excursion through world-renowned Addo Elephant Park. Along the way, you are sure to spot rhino, zebra, buffalo and antelope, too.

For an even deeper glimpse into the world of African animals like giraffe, white lion, and the mysterious leopard, be sure to book the unbeatable Pumba Private Game Reserve tour.

What people are saying about Port Elizabeth

The pick up and drive to and from the park made the day so much easier. Nina was a fantastic guide, who was so enthusiastic and friendly. She was happy to talk about all the animals and areas of the park, and was full of knowledge. She was also a willing photographer, who made sure everyone was able to see the everything from any angle required. We met up with another group, led by Elvis, for a beautiful lunch in the middle of the park with wine and drinks covered by the tour cost. The afternoon saw us go through the north of the park and the second look out point. We were lucky enough to see all the animals but the lions, and had an amazing experience. Thanks to Nina and Elvis for the great day.

The guide Freddie Edward was absolutely superb. This was also the case with the guide who showed us around the Campanile. She was called Tammy ( Tamsin) and her enthusiasm and knowledge were incredible. We saw many other places including the City Hall, the former market square, the Donkin Reserve, the Piazza Mosaic and the Voting Line. All explained with enthusiasm by Freddie who was happy to share his knowledge too of everyday life in South Africa.

The guide was very pleasant and nice. We saw some animals and it was wonderful. Elephants, families of elephants with their babies. We saw them playing. We also saw zebras and lions and more. The problems were that: 1. it was very hot in the car. The air con was hardly effective. 2. We drove many hours and saw very little. So most of the time was hot and boring. Lunch was very good. But again, it was very hot at the restaurant.

Freddie very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Showed no annoyance that we berthed late due to weather. Was a little uncomfortable being taken into a shop to buy water when we were told street was controlled by Nigerian drug dealers, better to have water on minibus ready.

Generally good. Sightings of big game limited (No fault of the guide). Expected to see more groups of elephants in particular, but generally single animals. Luck of the draw I suppose. Probably wrong time of year..I’m told winter is better
