Full description
Set off on a 3-hour whale-watching excursion to see some of the most magnificent marine mammals in the Azores. You’ll be on the lookout for mink whales, dolphins, turtles and more. The marine biologist on board will provide historical information and commentary. Begin with a briefing by a biologist, who will explain how local people have converted whale hunting to whale watching in the Azores. You’ll also receive information about safety, rules of observation and respect for the animals and an overview of what may be sighted during the tour. Leaving from the Ponta Delgada harbor, you’ll sail in style out onto the Atlantic. Qualified biologists and nature guides will provide detailed explanations and collect scientific data during the tour. Situated in the Atlantic Ocean between Portugal and North America, the Azores are a permanent home or point of passage for more than a third of the world’s whale and dolphin species. Sperm whales, common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins and Risso’s dolphins are present around the Archipelago of the Azores throughout the year. Other species visit or pass by during specific seasons so that the sightings vary considerably during the year — and often from day to day! Summer months are the best time to see Atlantic spotted dolphins, pilot whales and striped dolphins, whereas the spring months are the time to see migrating baleen whales such as blue whales, fin whales and sei whales. Although nature offers no guarantees, whales and dolphins are regularly seen during the tours, along with turtles, seabirds and other marine life.

Ever cynical I wondered the authenticity of the lists of sightings and explanation of watchers at strategic points ashore - but I absolutely can 100% assure any other doubters that these guys have a passion to share their wildlife and work together to find sightings in the allocated time slot. Their experience shows through. Patience is key. We were lucky enough to see sperm whales very close. And oceanic bottle nose dolphins. Remember your sunscreen even if it does not feel warm. And go for it. !

Memorable experience lived aboard a zodiac that can accommodate up to 12 passengers arranged in 2 rows, ensuring excellent visibility for all. The small size of the boat allows you to travel faster and get closer to the animals. During our tour (morning of August 22nd) we spotted 3 species of dolphins (in large groups) and 3 sperm whales. Our guide was very knowledgeable and personable. We appreciated that on the way back to the port they stopped to retrieve residues of fishing nets seen at sea.

The trip was well organized, the guide was friendly, knowledgeable and spared no effort to have us live the best experience possible. We took the tour on Aug 18 at 1 pm on the smallest boat. The weather was good, the sea relatively calm, but get ready to get wet!If you may suffer from sea sickness, I'd advise the bigger boat. We saw both dolphins and whales, of course it takes patience and luck to see many animals and up close. I recommend you check in advance what animlas you are likely to see at that given time in thse waters in order to have the right expectations set. During the trip, the guide explained us about the animals we were seeing or were about to see, answering all our questions in a competent, fun and exhaustive way. Finally, we really appreciated that the activity is done in the maximum respect of animals and nature.
