Enjoy every single moment in this beautiful island and explore everything Sao Miguel has to offer.  From Ponta Delgado you will drive towards Fogo Lake, taking the south side of the island towards Barrosa mountain. Stopping off at the Belvederes to admire the incredible surroundings, the tour continues to the regional natural monument of Caldeira Velha (entrances fee not included). After winding your way to the stunning hot springs of Ribeira Grande and the tranquil São Brás Lake, the tour stops off at the Gorreana Tea Factory, where you will be invited totast different kinds of tea grown locally in the only tea plantations in Europe. After the tour, a picnic will be served for lunch. The afternoon takes you from the land to the sea on a whale watching activity. You will have the opportunity to watch some of more than 25 cetacean species that can be found in the Azores. Although nature offers no guarantees, whales and dolphins are regularly seen during the half day tours, along with turtles, seabirds and other marine life. Before the boat trip a briefing will take place to explain which cetacean species can be observed, safety measures aboard, how to respect the animals and rules of observation at sea as well as some historical facts. During the tour each passenger is required to wear a life vest (except on our catamaran).

Was interesting

We were collected at the tourism center and we were only told that the whale watching tour was canceled. When asked, she said she didn't know why. We got our packed lunch (tuna baguette, orange, Portuguese sweet specialty, a little water and orange juice). Unfortunately we had caught a foggy and windy day, so that the Lagoa do Fogo was not visible and hung in the fog. There is nothing you can do about it. We were in Chaldeira Velha, the Gorreana tea plantation & on a freshwater lake. Got a lot of interesting information about the island - that was great! Then the lady asked us who we had whale watching with - it wasn't on our note and she dropped us off wherever it was. We should please inquire, etc. The lady at whale watching was very friendly and helpful. Since Hurricane Lorenzo was raising the afternoon tours were canceled, but she offered us the tour for the next morning and it was great!

The experience was good in general, although there is a big difference in the level of professionalism between the company that takes the excursion to the lake and that of the whales. The first guide was 20 minutes late which caused us to go late all morning and running from side to side. We even had to cancel the visit to Gorreana because if not, we did not arrive in time for the whales. However, whale watching was great. The girl who went with us demonstrated great knowledge. Everything was very well organized and they even extended the activity to get to see a whale because the first one we saw relies on the fast bottom.
