Enjoy a shore excursion that takes you by 4WD to Lagoa do Fogo on the island of São Miguel. Explore the central massif, created by the “fire” volcano, following tracks through a special conservation area. Marvel at the waterfalls and the views of the sea.
What to Expect
Add some adventure to your Azores visit and explore the central massif of the Serra de Água de Pau on a 3-hour 4WD safari. See Lagoa do Fogo, or “Fire Lake,” a large lake on the island, that’s situated in an unspoiled natural area.
With tracks that are lined by native flora the entire area was classified by the European Commission as a Special Area of Conservation and part of the Natura 2000 network.
Around the conservation area you’ll see Monte Escuro, rising nearly 900 meters above sea level, Caldeira Velha, a warm water waterfall, and also the Salto do Cabrito falls.
Head out on a dirt trail to Ribeira Grande to see its small lighthouse and take some time to admire the sweeping views of the sea and the northern coast of the island. Continue on another dirt trail along the coast until you reach Santa Iria, the last stop on the tour before returning to Ponta Delgada.
