Our guide (I didn't get her name) was really excellent and she added alot to the experience. I would have missed out on so much detail without her knowledge and insights. After the tour she also game recommendations on where else to go in the site that was not covered in the tour. If it meets your budget, definitely go with the archaelogist guide!

our guide was extremely knowledgeable and what we enjoyed the most was learning the new things that are being discovered about Pompeii and Roman Life all the time on the basis of excavations that are ongoing. for example things like the fact that the eruption did not happen in August which has been long believed but in October. it was extremely helpful walking around with an archaeologist who had a lot of passion for the subject
