You must visit Pompeii with a guide to really understand the history of the city and its true story. Our guide, Paolo, gave us a lot of interesting information about the buildings there and added a little slice of luck as we were always the first to the places included in the itinerary and managed to get a real view of them. Although you don't get to see the whole city on the 2 hour tour, the guide helps you get a feel for the place and so you can further identify for yourself what you see on the walk.
