Civitavecchia: Tuscany Full-Day Guided Trip w/Wine Tasting

Civitavecchia: Tuscany Full-Day Guided Trip w/Wine Tasting

The tour start from Civitavecchia port/area. You will drive north with your English-speaking driver, through the beautiful landscape of Tuscany. After about a 50 minute’s drive, you will arrive in Maremma. A unique feature of Maremma is the variety of its territory: crystal clear, long beaches or impervious rocks, mountains covered with dense woods, lake and flat areas, green cultivated hills and natural thermal areas. A timeless area, rooted in ancient civilizations: the Etruscans before and the Romans later prospered for centuries leaving important testimonies, as shown by the Etruscan sites of Pitigliano, Vulci and the Roman city of Cosa. Tasting will be combined to a wine tasting class: you will have the chance to taste a selection of tuscan wines produced by the winemaker. First stop is to visit Montemerano. This town flourished in the second half of the 10th century when the province’s residents began moving inland to escape malaria and the endless barbarian invasions that plagued the coastline. Montemerano was governed by a democratic institution until 1272, when it fell into the hands of the Aldobrandeschi. In the second half of the 13th century, it passed to the Baschi, the feudal family that funded its expansion. At the end of the 14th century, the “Repubblica Senese” forced the Baschi to retreat. In 1556, it became part of the Medici’s vast rule, before the Hasburg Lorraine assigned Montemerano to the Municipality of Manciano, where it remains today. Next stop will be the amazing hot springs waterfall in Saturnia, Cascate del Mulino originate from the sulphurous waters of the Terme di Saturnia, a nearby spa and hotel. The water flows from the natural spring at a temperature of 37.5°C (98°C) and thanks to the presence of a particular element, known as Thermal Plankton, it is thought to be good for the skin, as well as for the digestive, circulatory, motor and respiratory systems. The sulphurous waters of Saturnia were already known to the Etruscans first and then to the Romans who believed that the thermal waters, with their beneficial properties, were a gift from the gods. The power of the sulphurous water coming from a millenary spring has carved over the centuries the white travertine rock giving rise to natural pools where you can immerse yourself for a moment of relaxation and escape from reality. After that the last stop will be in Pitigliano a genuine medieval cities 12th century. It is also called the Small Tuscan Jerusalem, rises up out of a massive rock, creating a fascinating mix of architecture and nature, hanging on the “tufo” a local stone between green valleys with a magic vision. Admire the Orsini Palace, the Fontana Medicea and an aqueduct made of “tufo” from the 14th century. From the main square, three parallel streets enter the village, intersected by a series of picturesque alleys: staircases, little arcades and decorations will present you a real Tuscan experience.

Also called 'Little Jerusalem', not only for its characteristic narrow streets, but also for the presence of a large Jewish community, well integrated with the local community since the 16th century, and for the presence of a Synagogue. But Pitigliano has other magnificences to show, such as the majestic Palazzo Orsini, the ancient residence of the Orsini family, lords of the county of Pitigliano, Sovana and Santa Fiora, and the Salvini Theatre. One of the most representative buildings in Pitigliano is certainly the Acquedotto Mediceo, an elegant structure for water supply, built at the behest of the Orsini family, continued in the Medici era and then restored by the Lorraine. The guided tour of the village lasts about 1.45 hours, then we will have 30 minutes free to visit the many small shops of local craftsmen, and then resume the bus and return to the starting points.
