Full description

Your will be pickup by Euro-Khmer Voyages Tour guide from the hotel that you stayed in Phnom Penh, then our guide & driver will drive you to visite the killing fields of Choeung Ek – 15 km south of Phnom Penh. The infamous killing fields have a bloody history. Once an orchard and a Chinese cemetery, the Khmer Rogue, lead by Pol Pot, turned the place into what became known as the killing fields. Over four years they massacred and buried 2.5 million people. After remembering the dead, return to Phnom Penh to visit Tuol Sleng Prison. Meaning hill of the poisonous trees, Pol Pot turned a once popular high school into a high security prison. 20,000 people were imprisoned there, many of whom were tortured for information. Today it serves as a museum and a reminder of darker days. The tour was very good. The driver and the guide picked us up in our hotel on the right time. The tourguide, Mr Channak, showed us the sites and he told us about the backgrounds of this sad piece of history. Moreover, he also told us about his personal experiences as he turned out to have been a Khmer survivor himself. That made the tour even more special for us.

This was totally worth it! Our guide, Mr.Channak, gave a great deal of valuable context and background to what we saw. In our view, indeed “a must” (!) as such a grave part of history should not be simplified. Obviously it still affects both the Cambodian society and its people - and we all must understand more about how this could happen and prevail as a major trauma in order to prevent anything like it to ever happen again. Our tour was a 4-hour one - and in our view this was too short. Ideally, we would have spent another couple of hours to allow for insights into all the various parts in the museum, but we had to rush through it. All in all - this is a must-do experience!

Definitely recommend this tour. It is an emotionally heavy tour but important in learning Cambodia’s history. Sam Ang was an excellent tour guide and shared his personal story of the Khmer Rouge era. We thank Sam Ang for this. The car was air conditioned, very comfortable and there was cold bottled water available.
