Overview
Take part in a small-group tour of American art, including a visit of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and Second Bank Portrait Gallery, as we turn our attention to the important artists of the early 19th century.
What to Expect
This 3-hour walking seminar, led by a scholar in American art, focuses on the important artists of the early 19th century and the institutions which they founded in Philadelphia.

We will begin our discussion outside Independence Hall where Charles Willson Peale displayed his growing collection of art in what is generally considered the first modern museum. Focusing on Peale's portrait gallery hanging in the historic Second U.S. Bank, we will discuss early American portraiture. We will also address how the institutionalization of American art took shape in the cultural and artistic hub of the young nation, and place art-making and viewing within a larger context of trans-Atlantic influences, philosophical inquiry, and evolving civic as well as national identities.

Our walk will then take us to Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the first successful art academy in the United States. Here we will encounter major works by Peale, along with works by other Pennsylvania artists in the Academy's collection of American art. We'll look at the role of the Academy and various art movements and communities in the region through the early 20th century up to today.
