The ferry crossing was more turbulent than expected. Several passengers had to be given bags, even our stomachs were queasy. So we were happy to have booked a bigger boat here. The time on site was sufficient to explore the island. Nice: the São João Baptista fortress. The glass bottom boat tour was nice but not a must have done.

If you’re in the area you HAVE to check out this national reserve. There was some confusion at the pick up spot because there are so many tour companies at that spot but once we got to the right place everything from there was smooth sailing. It was an ‘easy’ tour to take - definitely worth the money!

This is a really nice half day trip. You can imagine it like a trip from Hamburg to Helgoland (but there is a little shorter and smaller, Atlantic swell - no problem for us, but not everyone was fine). The trip takes about 25 minutes by catamaran. At the ticket counter you get a bracelet with a time for the boat tour. Once on the island, you either walk to the Castell, up on the plateau and down again. Castell costs € 1 entry (coffee / Pastei Nata also). Then the glass-bottom boat drives a little along the coast and brings you back to the pier. It works the other way around, first a glass-bottom boat and then on foot ... The glass-bottom boat is as good as blind, or you can hardly see anything because we had a bubble under the glass bottom and the pane also reflects the sky / sun. But, we really liked it and therefore we recommend this excursion!
