Pedra do Sal: Live Samba Night with Local Guide & Drink

Pedra do Sal is one of the nicest spots in the area known as Little Africa. This cradle of Carioca samba has become a paradise for those who like to mix history with beer, youth, samba, and nightlife. All of this takes place in front of a large rock with a carved staircase, Pedra do Sal, a heritage listed in 1984. The staircase gives access to Morro da Conceição. This area of Porto Maravilha is called Little Africa because it was a point of sale and exchange for slaves and shelter for quilombos. There, the salt from the ships that docked in the port was unloaded, the origin of the meeting of dockers sambistas. We'll meet at a specific location near Pedra do Sal to have a moment of community and I'll take you to the heart of samba in Rio de Janeiro. Get ready to explore some live samba music, get tips about street food and drinks, and meet genuine local people. You will get to know about the history of this place and why the whole samba culture is so important for us Cariocas. Join me in this local experience to feel immersed in this samba party night!

This introduction is important to better understand the tour and everything that will be covered along the way. You will then explore Largo da Prainha to learn about the African influence in Brazilian gastronomy. See the statue erected in honor of Mercedes Baptista, the forerunner of Afro dance in Brazil, and the first black dancer at the Municipal Theater in Rio de Janeiro. Luana was an engaged and knowledgeable guide, so personable and passionate. I appreciated how seamlessly she connected the long history of Little Africa to the social life of Rio and Brazil today, as well as the broader international context beyond. Besides that, she wove in stories from her own life as a Carioca and guide. It made the whole tour that much more meaningful.

Such an interesting and informative tour! Jaíse was awesome. Her historical knowledge was so detailed and inspiring! She made the history of Afro-Brazilians come alive… Inviting me to dine at an authentic Samba jam session at the town square capped off this truly immersive and amazing experience. I highly recommend her and this tour!

The tour was awesome! Our guide was very knowledgeable and energetic about the foods, the places we went and local history and culture. I’m so glad we went on this tour, it was a lot of fun!

Raquel was very knowledgeable and engaging - there's lots to learn about this side of Rio's history and attending the tour has made me want to find out more.

It was amazing!!! Nathalie made us feel comfortable immediately and we had a great time with her ! I would absolutely recommend this tour with her!!!
