Mérida: Montejo Boulevard and Historic Center bike tour

Mérida: Montejo Boulevard and Historic Center bike tour

We will pick up our bikes at Paseo Montejo Boulevard. We will go on the bicycle lanes on an avenue with trees and palms that will protect us from the sun's rays. We will stop at the Monument to the Homeland where I will give you a brief explanation. There you will have time to take photos because it is a unique space in Mexico. We will continue back stopping at four different beautiful mansions. I will tell you who inhabited them and their relationship with the golden age of Yucatan. In the second half, we will go on a very safe street directly to the Plaza Mayor of the city to show you buildings such as the cathedral and the house of the conquistadors dating from the colonial era, parks created in the 19th century, the main theater seen from the outside , among other attractions. At the end, we will go to the Santa Anna market to refresh ourselves with a fruit drink of your choice. We will return to the same meeting place to leave our bicycles on Paseo Montejo. At all the stops there is shade and in others we can walk a bit to see more carefully the attractions that I will show you. The duration of the bike tour is 2 hours and a half covering about 4 miles or 7 kilometers. The entire surface that we will cover is totally flat.

Desde Mérida: City Tour Mérida

Desde Mérida: City Tour Mérida

We start the tour when our guide arrives for you at the lobby of your hotel, to begin to discover the history and magic of the white city. Mérida is a colonial city founded in 1542 by the Spanish Francisco de Montejo (El Mozo), it is one of the cities in Mexico where tranquility is breathed every day. The peace of this city, the beauty of its streets, make it a place of elegance and its architecture; Its Plaza Mayor is a vibrant meeting place where you can enjoy traditional drinks, such as champola or sorbet; Its live music and its cultural extravagance have led Lonely Planet to name it the American capital of culture in 2017. The tour will begin with a visit to the Great Museum of the Mayan World. Continue to Paseo de Montejo to admire the monument to the homeland (which cites the most important events in the history of Yucatan and our country), its beautiful French-style mansions. Afterwards, the main streets of the city of Mérida will be visited, such as Calle 60, 61 and 62, which contains the Plaza de Armas, the cathedral, as well as the house of the founder of the city (with its Mexican baroque-style façade). The city has an exquisite gastronomic heritage, it is for them that we will delight in the Museum of Yucatecan Gastronomy and later return you to your hotel.

Our guide was very friendly right from the start, asked us our names and where we’re from, in well spoken English. It was quick and easy to get the bikes sorted, myself and another member of the group is over 6’ tall, but it was no bother getting the right bike frame, and a protective helmet was also provided. The tour was excellent, our guide used a speaker so he could ride at the front and explain everything as we passed. There are several stops in the itinerary, everything explained very thoroughly, and using a handheld laser to point at things far away on buildings and monuments, making it easy to follow. The cycling pace was very gentle, easy to keep up, most of the route is bicycle lanes, and when in the road the traffic is light and the cars are very patient around cyclists. I really can’t fault our experience, it was a fantastic way to see the city, and thoroughly enjoyed our experience.

Ivan is a special guide. He loves the city and you can say from the way he speaks about it. He is keen to answer every single question we made with a detailed explanation about the Maya or Mexico in general. Thank to Ivan we know a little more about Merida and its history. Highly recommended

Thoughtful, knowledgable and security concious guide. Good value for money. Do not search for bikes at the pickup point (they are on a sidestreet that you walk to with the guide). Just wait in the corner of the museum.
