Climb aboard a high speed TGV train from Paris to Avignon for a full-day tour of Provence, and discover the area’s magnificent beauty and rich history at sites such as the Pont du Gard and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
Pass the beautiful landscapes of Burgundy and the Rhone Valley en route to Avignon, where, on arrival you will be transfered to the Palais des Papes (Popes’ Palace), one of the biggest gothic palaces in Europe.
Explore the fascinating building with the help of an audio guide, and learn the history of how Avignon became the “City of Popes.” Then, enjoy some free time to explore the city at your own pace, including time to find a spot for lunch (own expense)
Next, travel by air-conditioned coach to the Roman ruins of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, pausing for a brief photo opportunity before continuing to the village of Les Baux de Provence, dramatically perched on a mountain spur of the Alpilles mountains. Admire its gorgeous 16th-century houses as you enjoy some free time to shop for local products, including lavender and Provencal fabrics.
Drive on to the Roman Pont du Gard bridge, built in the 1st century AD and the highest of all the Roman aqueducts. It was added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1985 because of its historical importance.
Transfer back to Paris on the TGV from Avignon, with an estimated arrival at the Gare de Lyon in Paris at around 22:45.
