Paris Catacombs: Small-Group Tour
- See the haunting burial ground of more than 6 million Parisians
- Enjoy a small group tour with an expert guide
- Hear chilling stories of the history of the Catacombs
The tour will begin outside the Catacombs, where your guide will tell you about their extraordinary and often disturbing history. Discover how they came to be a final resting place for so many Parisians before exploring the tombs in silence. Since there is no talking allowed inside, your guide will lead you through the underground passageways before giving a Q&A session at the end.
Originally the Catacombs were limestone quarries where stones were mined to build some of the most famous bridges and buildings in Paris. By the late 1700s millions of bodies were exhumed from the city’s overcrowded cemeteries and moved to the Catacombs. Once underground the bodies were stacked one on top of the other in the various chambers, creating walls literally lined with human bones.
- 3-hour guided small-group tour of the Catacombs
- Entrance to the Catacombs (payable to your guide, EUR 30 per person)
The meeting point for the tour is near the Paris Catacombs Metro stop. You will be provided exact details in our confirmation email. (Metro stop: Denfert-Rochereau, Exit 1, wait by the bench above ground)
The Catacombs have a strict 200-person capacity. For safety reasons, during the busy summer months you may have to wait to enter (typically 15-20 minutes).
The Catacombs have temporarily suspended their skip-the-line agreements with tour operators. Because of this you now have to queue up at 09:00 to guarantee entry at 10:00 when the Catacombs open.
The Catacombs require silence upon entry, so the spoken portion of your tour actually begins above ground with your guide. This ensures that once inside, you get the full effect of the somber Catacombs. As soon as you return above ground your guide will finish with a Q&A session and provide personalized recommendations for the rest of your stay in Paris.
