There's more to see in Versailles than just the palace, and this walking tour is a great way of learning about the rich history of the town. A buffet lunch full of French specialties will set you up for the rest of your day in Versailles.
What to Expect
Begin you journey at the Monument Café near the palace for an all-you-can-eat buffet lunch. Choose from a variety of French specialties, plus one drink (beer, wine, a hot drink or a soft drink). While you dine, you can gaze in wonder at a scale model of the palace.
Continue your visit in the historic district of Versailles, called the Saint Louis district. Take in the beauty of the Versailles Cathedral. Walk through the Carrés St-Louis, the town's old market square built under Louis XV, and see the house where that king's mistresses lived. Your guide will also point out the bakery where a demonstration march known as the 'Women's March on Versailles' began in 1789 during the French Revolution, protesting the scarcity of bread.
Pay a visit to the King's Kitchen Garden, created by Louis XIV to furnish fresh produce for the palace kitchen. There, you'll visit the Royal Tennis Court, the setting for the start of the French Revolution in 1789, as well as the Municipal Library. The latter is where the Treaty of Versailles was signed in 1783, establishing the independence of the United States.
This is where your tour ends, and after your meal you're free to visit the Palace of Versailles and its expansive gardens on your own. Ask your guide for tips about visiting the palace or for directions before you part ways.
