As you discover a world beneath the streets of Paris, see tunnels and rooms decorated with the human bones and skulls of around 6 million Parisians. The Paris Catacombs were originally a quarry with hundreds of kilometers of tunnels burrowed beneath the streets of Paris. When the cemeteries of Paris became overfilled, the city started moving the dead into the Catacombs.

Glad I pre booked, I had an early morning slot and the signs were already up to say sold out for the day. One slightly dizzying decent down lots of stairs and I was in a dark, creepy, beautiful and fascinating underground labyrinth of dead people arranged into strangely photogenic patterns. It’s easy to navigate your way around and you can’t get lost, so ignore all the urban legends of tourists vanishing down tunnels never to be seen again! Definitely worth a visit if you like your “dark tourism” or a want to see a completely unique side of Paris. The limited numbers also means there’s plenty of time and space to look around and get your photos without some random person getting in the way of your perfect shot!

We had an audio guide with us, which you have to say that you can only use cable headphones there and no wireless ones, which I think is a shame because we had to listen to the audio playback loudly and if several people are standing at one point you can hardly understand it, but that would be without an audio guide been very boring so it was still very interesting and is highly recommended.

Audio guide was easy to use, we bypassed the line so that was also good. There wasn’t a huge line on the other side either tbf. Also there is a loo when you walk in, this was important to me at the time lol. The location is good, we went from gare du nord on the metro and ended up across the road from the entrance. The people working could speak different languages including English which is handy. There’s a fair few stairs which is one long spiral so if you have vertigo maybe wait for others to go down first so you can stop midway.. the stairs back up are also spiralled. The audio guide was great, told you everything you needed to know and the sections are all labelled with numbers. Is interesting and eerie. Also you will spot a little graffiti and dens made from people who sneak in on a night, I know this is isn’t a good thing but I like the idea of a teenage hang out, they haven’t ruined any formation or structure so that’s good
