Full description

Hike the elephant-shaped mountain of the Cerro de Oro in the Guatemalan rainforest, and learn the legend of the lost Mayan gold and how it eluded the Spanish Conquistadors. Located on the slopes of Atitlan Volcano, the small hill is the site of a Mayan altar, still used by shamans for fire ceremonies. It is also said to be home to a portal to the Xibalba (Underworld).

During your hike, you will visit the altar, and see evidence of recent volcanic activity. The Cerro de Oro was formed more than 5,000 years ago and takes the form of a reclining elephant that inspired the Sleeping Elephant character in “The Little Prince.” Walk through the shaded coffee plants of the surrounding plantations, looking for the abundant birdlife. Go to the village church, built from hand-hewn volcanic stone, and enjoy stunning views from the plaza. Then, relax with a delicious lunch at a private villa on the shores of Lake Atitlan, and dine surrounded by lush gardens. You are free to enjoy the facilities, including kayaking and swimming. Alternatively, relax in the sauna, play a game of badminton, or play billiards on the pool tables. Return to your hotel in style, cruising by private boat across Lake Atitlan.
