First time in Palermo: Everything you need to know

With a striking blend of Arabic, Roman, and Norman architecture, charmingly chaotic street markets, and some of Italy’s most distinctive (and delicious) food, Palermo draws visitors from all over the world. If it’s your first time in Palermo, prepare for days spent exploring landmarks like the Cathedral and the Palace of the Normans, and evenings tucking into pasta con le sarde (a signature pasta dish with sardines and anchovies) in intimate restaurants.

From the best neighborhoods to how to get around, this first-timer’s guide covers all the things to know about Palermo.

Fantastic! Graziella was an amazing host with a warm inviting home. We traveled from Palermo on the train which was super easy to arrive to her house. Food was delightful and fulfilling. For Valentine’s Day we wanted to do a special activity and this was perfect as a couple. While my partner does not enjoy the kitchen, she fell in love with the process and was excited learning. Graziella made her feel comfortable and made us have a fun relaxing time. Graciela class was very well planned and great for a group activity or couples. It was an authentic cozy cultural immersion. We 100% would do this again and encourage others to choose Graziella as their Sicilian cooking mama!

A mix of time in the olive grove and time tasting and talking about the process and products. A great way to learn more about the area and olive oil and wine processes. We really enjoyed the vibe of the guide and were very welcomed by the family.

Fantastic wine tasting. We got to try 5 lovely local wines and they were all paired with small, delicious snacks. The host was so well informed and translated everything to english for us. Would recommend.

Absolutely fantastic. The food and wine were spectacular, and the explanations went deep into the regionality and characteristics of the grapes and production methods. Would absolutely recommend.
