Expensive but Worth it to See Etna in a Short Amount of Time

We had one day to visit Mount Etna. My boyfriend had "stand on a live volcano" on his bucket list so I knew we had to do a day trip. After looking at not entirely convincing reviews, we decided to chance it. The guide, Umberto, didn't speak any English hardly at all, and in our group of 8 who took the tour, we didn't speak hardly any Italian. We used Google Translate to communicate, and sometimes things got lost in translation, but Umberto knew a lot about the area and tried to explain the agriculture, the local flavours, the customs; the only bit that we had trouble with was some of his jokes were lost of us. All in all, if you absolutely MUST see Etna and you don't have a lot of time, I would definitely taking this tour and taking a guide on the mountain itself to maximize seeing what you want to see. Our group opted NOT spending an extra 72 Euros for the guides and the cable car up the mountain so we explored one of the lower craters for an hour and Taormina for 2 hours.

Great but communication could have been better!

I absolutely loved the trip to Etna and Taormina. Despite half of our group opting for an English-spoken guide, our driver only spoke Italian. This wasn't a problem- as a group, we managed to get by. My one criticism would be regarding the pick up time. I had to chase for confirmation of a pick up time from the host the night before and eventually was told this would be 7am. However, when I left my apartment at 7am on the day, the driver waiting outside seemed angry- saying that I'd been keeping him waiting for a whole twenty minutes prior to this. Aside from that, we had sufficient time in both areas. 2 hours in Etna, which was just enough to get the cable car to the top and return. Then we had another 2.5 hours in Taormina. I had researched a lot in trying to find the most cost effective trip to Etna from Palermo, and this was by far the best option!

Guide was difference between a good day and a great day

Etna was natural and beautiful and a bit of a challenge scaling, but well worth the effort . Toarmina was beautiful and the Amphitheatre is a real treasure. However the was made really great due to our guide and driver, Michael. He was very friendly, informative and gave good advice and tips about both parts of the trip. He was very punctual and gave us plenty of time and notice st Rach stop. Nothing was too much trouble and his conversation was also a nice distraction . Can’t give more praise fora great experience, Thanks Michael. From the Liverpool family

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip! The guide (Joshua) speaks perfect English. He was very friendly and also was very careful with driving, as I've informed him about my car sickness. He told us a lot of interesting facts about Sicily. We were lucky with weather on top of Etna, so we could clearly see other craters and Sicily. Taormina was a very nice addition, cute small town with an amazing amphitheater. Overall, we had a blast! :)

Wonderful, knowledgable guide, Michael, who kept us entertained and educated throughout the day. I was surprised at how smooth the ride was to the other side of the island and how good the roads are - it is vitally a continuous motorway viaduct. Having experienced Corsica and Crete it was a welcome relief! Etna and Taormina were a revelation.
