What to Expect
Discover 2 gems of Sicily on a full-day sightseeing tour from Palermo, and visit the historic towns of Piazza Armerina and Caltagirone, known for their stunning mosaics.
Following a pick-up from your Palermo hotel, you will drive to Piazza, renamed Piazza Armerina in 1862. Famous for the Roman mosaics of the Villa Romana del Casale, located just southwest of the town, the villa will be your first stop to admire mosaics that cover the floors of the entire house. Built in the first quarter of the 4th century, they are thought to be the most impressive collection of Roman mosaics in the world.
Continue to Caltagirone, best known for its pottery production. The town takes its name from the Arabic "Qal'at-al-Jarar" (“Castle of Jars”), and flourished during the Norman domain. Destoyed by an earthquake in 1693, many buildings have been faithfully restored, including some exquisite public stairs.
Admire the staircase of Santa Maria del Monte before wandering the Old Town to reach the Ceramics Museum and its beautiful garden. You will have some time to shop in the town’s many souvenir stores to purchase your own piece of pottery, before your return to Palermo.
