Full description

Explore Teatro Massimo, the open-air market "Il Capo", Piazza Della Memoria (Memorial dedicated to prosecutors and judges killed by the Mafia), Piazza Beati Paoli, the Cathedral, the City Hall, and Piazza Magione. Every stop will be a pause for reflection, a chance to mull over the realities of the Mafia and consider the civic movement against Mafioso power. Along the tour, you will meet shopkeepers who have said NO to paying the Pizzo, who have subscribed to the ethical consumer campaign ‘Pago chi non Paga’ (I pay who does not pay). This campaign is promoted by Addiopizzo to support those that have decided to rebel against the Mafia. End the tour at Antica Focacceria San Francesco, one of the oldest restaurants in Palermo, famous for its ‘Cibo da Strada Palermitano’ (street food of Palermo). Learn about how the owners had the courage to speak out against extortion. Lunch is not included but if you decide to stay you can taste some specialties like, "pane con la Milza" (sandwich stuffed with beef spleen and ricotta cheese), "Arancine" (rice balls), "Panelle" (chickpea fritters), "Anelletti al Forno" (baked ring-shaped pasta), "Involtini di Melanzane" (eggplant rolls), "Sarde a Beccafico" (sardine rolls) and the famous Cannoli.

It was a very interesting tour. We saw several of Palermo’s biggest sites through the lens of Sicily’s relationship with the Mafia. If you’re worried about a group tour being too “touristy,” that’s not a concern here since our guide was upfront about how annoyed she was about Sicily’s association with the Mafia in popular culture. You should definitely be interested in the subject matter because there is a lot of pausing for storytelling. We were up for that and came away feeling as if we learned a lot. We’d recommend!

Good day tour, stripping away the myths of the Sicilian Mafia and the positive things being used to help dismantle their influence in Sicily. Guide was excellent. We stopped at some interesting places on our route through Palermo. I visited the Gelato shop several times during my trip. It was excellent.

The tour is a must for all Palermo visitors and upright people. What a handful of students began is today one of the best anti-mafia organizations Italy has to offer. If you can do the tour in Italian, you might be lucky enough to meet guide Cloe, who provides many private details about the history of AddioPizzo.
