Full description

Enjoy a scenic drive into the countryside to Agrigento on this full-day excursion from Palmero. Situated on a plateau overlooking the sea, with the Hypsasand the Akragas rivers nearby and a ridge to the north offering a degree of natural fortification, Agrigento was founded in the 6th century BC by Greek colonists from Gela. The excursion includes a short stop for a coffee (not included in the tour price) en route to Agrigento, before arriving at the Valley of the Temples. You can further explore the Hera, Concordia and Apollo temples and Hardcastle villa, with a guidebook that will provide more information about the sites. You’ll have free time to decide on a place for lunch, before your driver takes you to the Agrigento Archaeology Museum, at an additional cost. After exploring the museum’s collections, you’ll be transferred back to Palermo.

It's a long bus ride, without commentary, to and from Agrigento (about 2.5 hrs each way), with a utilitarian stop en route. But it's worth it. The guided visit to the temples site was excellent. Our guide is a long-time resident of Agrigento, and she knows her stuff. We were very impressed and enjoyed her tour thoroughly.

I would have liked some narrative on the long drive to describe the countryside (why were half built roads everywhere? What were the many flowers by roadside?) and alleviate boredom. Also disappointed that the cost did not include entry to the park or a guided tour of the park (or at least a map - I got lost from exit and had to be rescued).

This was the perfect way to visit the Valley of the Temples. The drive there and back was so good we would have been happy to do it even without the temples. I wish we had seen the garden, in part because it was a very windy day and the garden was sheltered.
