This tour involves a long journey from San Cristóbal (about 6 hours by van). Luckily, the drivers know the area well and are good drivers despite the numerous potholes and curves. For my taste, the blue waterfalls are too touristy, full of stalls selling handicrafts. In the middle of the waterfalls, you can cool off and take a dip. The Misol-Ha waterfall is beautiful because it is different from the others. It is a curtain of water that allows access from the back to see the entire landscape and a small cave where the water filters through. Palenque is the most spectacular part of the tour, a Mayan archaeological site in the middle of the jungle with panoramic views from the top of the temples. The Palenque area is highly recommended and well worth the trip.

A long but enjoyable day. The extra guide at Palenque Ruins cost an additional 600 pesos p.p., which was a lot, but did give us an additional little tour of the jungle too, which was interesting. We were given 2.5 hours at Agua Azul waterfall, which felt too long, but if you bring your swimming gear, it does allow you time to swim in the beautiful water. This trip involved a lot of driving between places, making it a long day. The journey back required us to wait for 30 minutes at a cross road to allow some people from our bus to be picked up by another bus to continue on to San Cristobal. I liked the fact they weren’t just dumped by the side of the road, but taken care off, even if that made the rest of us home later.

Well organised, English speaking guide available. I wish that I’m there was more free time at the ruins.
