Chantilly: The Very Rich Hours of the Duke of Berry Exhibit

Chantilly: The Very Rich Hours of the Duke of Berry Exhibit

Step into a world of artistic grandeur with the exhibition, "The Très Riches Heures: A Masterpiece of Medieval Art." This exhibition showcases the illustrious manuscript, the Très Riches Heures du duc de Berry, a pinnacle of medieval artistry and craftsmanship. Commissioned in the early 15th century by Jean de Valois, Duke of Berry, and completed over decades by a succession of renowned artists, this prayer book is celebrated for its exquisite ornamentation and rich iconography. Featuring 206 pages adorned with 66 large paintings and 65 miniatures, the manuscript is crafted with the rarest pigments, epitomizing the artistic excellence of the era. Acquired by the Duke of Aumale in 1856, the Très Riches Heures has since captured the collective imagination, offering a glimpse into an idealized Middle Ages. This exhibition invites you to explore the intricate beauty and historical significance of a work that has no rival in the history of art. This book holds a significant place in the history of art, arguably without equal. Such was the esteem in which the Duke of Aumale, Henri d'Orléans (1822-1897), held his most treasured manuscript, the Très Riches Heures du duc de Berry. Commissioned in the early 15th century by Jean de Valois (1340-1416), Duke of Berry, this prayer book for laypeople was entrusted to the young artists Paul, Jean, and Hermann de Limbourg from Nijmegen. They worked alongside copyists and painters of initials but passed away in 1416, the same year as the Duke of Berry, leaving the manuscript unfinished. Throughout the 15th century, other painters like Barthélémy d'Eyck around 1445, and Jean Colombe in 1485, commissioned by the Duke of Savoy, contributed to its completion. Ultimately, it became a magnificent "cathedral book," a collaborative masterpiece made possible by a succession of artists and patrons. The Duke of Aumale acquired it in 1856; the 206 pages feature 66 large paintings and 65 miniatures crafted with the rarest pigments. He soon recognized it as the crown jewel of his collection. After being forgotten for three centuries in private Italian collections, the Très Riches Heures gained immense renown and helped shape an idealized vision of the Middle Ages in the public imagination. Its exquisite ornamentation, rich iconography, and artistic brilliance make it an exceptional work.

The gardens were so beautiful. I loved the little crepe stand in the courtyard and I had such a fabulous time. Not a criticism but something I found funny was that inside the kangaroo enclosure on the palace grounds are in fact wallabies. Super cute and fluffy but not kangaroos.

The palace is a little far from Paris, but it is worth the effort to visit. It is smaller and less imposing than the Palace of Versailles, but it has its charms and is not usually crowded.
