Full description
Your tour will start at the Yacht Club, where your friendly local guide will transport you to the caves in a 12-seater dual air-conditioned minibus, around a 15-minute journey. Your 30 minute guided tour will follow a wooden boardwalk through a 200-meter limestone cave system. Once inside, you will see thousands of glowworms spread across the ceiling surrounded by breathtaking stalactites and stalagmites. You will hear about the history of the caves, which were discovered in the early 17th century by Roku. Hineamaru, famous chieftainess of the Ngati Hine Tribe arrived at Waiomio with her aged father, Torongare and her brothers. As you enjoy the galaxies of glowworms above, your friendly guide will explain the life cycle of the New Zealand Glowworm (Arachnocampa Luminosa) and the intricate webs used to catch their prey. You’ll even get close enough to see the actual body of the glowworm and its stunning blue/green tail light before you make the return bushwalk through a natural corridor of karst rock formations and pristine rainforest.

We had booked just the Glow worm caves but ended up with more which worked out well. The meeting place was at a different spot than what was on the coupon bit with a quick phone call they were able to pick us up. The Glow worm caves were quite amazing with the young tour guide being very informative. The caves were a bit smaller than I expected but still really interesting. Our bus tour guide Robin was fantastic. Also very informative and helpful.

Pretty good quick cave tour although they don’t allow cameras or video which is a shame since other glow worm caves do. Simply say ‘no flash’ and it doesn’t disturb the worms. Fun experience that I now don’t have pics or video from. I recommend doing a different cave tour that allows cameras and videos and isn’t so strict. Felt a bit like military school with staff monitoring from the front and back. Unfortunate.
