Øvre Eidfjord

Discover the beauty of Norway's natural landscapes on an easy-going guided nature tour with transportation from Eidfjord. Enjoy leisure time to take in the panorama, stop for a slice of homemade cake at a local hotel, or join the guide for an easy hike via a 47-meter-wide walking bridge over a gorge. Continue the tour to the uniquely impressive Sysen Dam, where you can also catch sight of Norway's second-largest glacier. Take one last stop on a mountain plateau to appreciate the scenic landscape, before heading back to Eidfjord.

Begin your private tour with hotel or port pickup in Bergen, and travel west via Highway 7, one of Norway’s scenic tourist roads, to Hardangerfjord. En route, hear about the region’s history and nature from your driver-guide, and take in views of mountain pastures, deep valleys and pretty villages. Make photo stops at the waterfalls of Fossen Bratte and Steinsdalsfossen. Continue to Hardangerfjord and appreciate the full scale of the mountain-framed inlet as you drive toward the upper end. Then, venture across the Hardangerfjord Bridge, one of the world’s longest suspension bridges, absorbing the incredible surrounding scenery. On the other side, pass through the town of Eidfjord and stop in Øvre Eidfjord, a tiny village beautifully set beneath the Hardangervidda mountain plateau. Visit the Hardangervidda Nature Centre (own expense), a cutting-edge museum dedicated to the region’s nature and wildlife. Explore the dioramas and interactive exhibits covering everything from glaciers to zoology, and watch the panoramic film on Hardangervidda and Hardangerfjord — an immersive journey through the area's waterfalls, canyons and glaciers. Next, head to a cozy restaurant specializing in authentic Norwegian cuisine. Enjoy lunch here (own expense) before continuing to Vøringfossen, Norway’s biggest waterfall. Enjoy the views of this precipitous fall, whose waters plunge 597 feet (182 meters) from the Hardangervidda plateau into a narrow valley. Finally, take a different route back to Bergen, where your tour ends at the start point.

Day 1: Bergen - Voss - Nærøyfjord - Aurland - Stegastein Viewpoint - Flåm - Voss Begin your journey with a scenic drive from Bergen to Voss, followed by a breathtaking Nærøyfjord cruise. Enjoy stunning views from the Stegastein Viewpoint before exploring Flåm and also the Flåm train, then return to Voss for the night. Day 2: Voss - Eidfjord - Vøringsfossen - Hardangerfjord - Odda - Bergen First, we'll take in the panoramic views of Voss from the Voss Gondol. Then, we set off from Voss to explore the Hardangerfjord by cruise, visiting the majestic Vøringsfossen waterfall along the way. Afterward, we’ll continue along the Hardangerfjord to Odda, a charming town nestled between fjords and mountains, then follow with steindalsfossen and back to bergen. Departure is at the bus station in Bergen at the bus stop P. One suitcase and one piece of hand luggage can be taken per person. The first stop will be after about an hour and a half at Steinsdalsfossen waterfall, which has a height of about 50 meters. Take a walk right behind the falling water without getting wet and enjoy the time to visit the cozy café and souvenir store. We then continue in the direction of Norheimsund. From there on, the Hardanger Fjord will be on our right all the time, until we enter the Vallavik tunnel after about 50 minutes and then cross the Hardanger bridge. This is a 55-meter-tall, 1,380-meter-long engineering feat that was the longest bridge in Norway and the 10th-longest in the world when it opened. We now have the Eidfjord on our left and after about 10 minutes we drive through the village of the same name. After about another 25 minutes we reach the Vøringfossen waterfall, a breathtaking natural wonder with a total drop of 182 meters. Spend around 30 minutes at the waterfall, admiring its beauty and the surrounding landscapes. Use this time to visit the cozy cafe in the Fossli Hotel too. After a few minutes' drive, we reach the Hardangevidda plateau, home to the largest reindeer population in Europe and is above the tree line. The highest point of Hardangevidda is around 1500 meters above sea level, and some of the last snow does not thaw here until August. The pure travel time from here to the station in Geilo is only about one hour and 15 minutes. Depending on the weather and time, we will make a photo stop on the way. We will then stop directly at the train station in Geilo. From here you can continue your journey by train. It's a wonderful train journey and, depending on the connection, it takes between four and five hours to arrive directly in the center of Oslo at Central Station. Have fun in this exciting city.
