Experience

Highlights
  • Paddling warm shallow areas with glowing dolphin, manatee, and fish
  • Anything in the water that moves glows, including your kayak paddle or hand.
Full description
The source of our “living lights”—bioluminescence—is dinoflagellates,  single-celled organisms common in marine environments. Each bioluminescent dinoflagellate flashes only a fraction of a second when disturbed by water movement, but its high concentrations in the warm Indian River water create beautiful bluish-white trails of light caused by swimming fish and paddling kayakers. A swimming manatee may be completely concealed in a spectacular, other-worldly cloud of “living light!” Upon arriving at the park, check in with the trip leaders which includes signing a mandatory release of liability and assumption of risk form. You will be outfitted with a life jacket, kayak, and paddle. After some brief instruction, we will paddle as a group in search of the “living lights.” Most tours last a couple of hours, however, if the bioluminescence is super bright and dolphins or manatee show up on the scene, well . . . time just doesn’t matter.

Meeting point

From Orlando drive east on Highway 528 towards Cape Canaveral. Drive 1 mile past exit #52 you will cross a bridge, at the end of the bridge immediately exit to the right off the highway and onto the dirt road beside 528. Follow the dirt road to the right, drive under the bridge and follow the dirt road back around to the other side until you find the 3 tiki torches and a big white van pulling a kayak trailer. If you pass the turn-off on the right just make a u-turn 1/4 mile past the turn-off, head west on the 528, and exit the dirt parking lot before the bridge with a big sign that says “Banana River Drive” exit 52 1 mile.

good guide

We had contacted ourselves about the weather / storm when it turned out that we had received the wrong location. Good that we called ourselves and on time otherwise we would have stood somewhere for nothing and lost our money. now we had to drive for more than 40 minutes, very poorly organized, the guide has to solve everything while his boss makes the reservations. please contact us about this because of course this should not be possible.
