Learn about German heritage in Odessa on a 5-hour tour of the city center. Visit the decorative Opera House, Lutheran Church of St. Paul and more. Then tour some former German villages in the countryside, stopping to taste Ukraine wine.
What to Expect
Start this half-day tour of Odessa at Primorsky Boulevard by the monument to Duc de Richelieu, where you can admire the recently renovated Ekaterina Square and its monument to Queen Ekaterina II, Sophie Auguste Friederike von Anhalt-Zerbst-Dornburg, founder of the city and port.
Follow your guide to the elegant colonnades of Vorontsov Palace, former residence of the city governor. A short walk across the “Mother-in-Law Bridge” will lead you to a part of the boulevard known as “A Piece of Old Odessa.” Here lies the Shah’s Palace, with a globe supported by 2 mighty Atlantis figures that reveal the remarkable architecture of 19th-century Odessa.
Learn about the barons Falz-Fein, the first representatives of the Russian dynasty to arrange the settlement of colonists from the Malosossiya territory. Originally German, they swore loyalty to the Russian throne and served the Russian Empire for more than a century.
The coach will then take you to the elaborate Opera House, designed by German architect Helmer and Austrian architect Ferdinand Fellner. Continue to the lovely City Garden, laid out by the German botanist Hans Hermann. Travel along picturesque streets to the Lutheran Church of St. Paul, where the German choir or organ player will play for you, while representatives of the German Culture Centre explain the history of the Germans in Odessa.
Next, drive out to the countryside, passing through former German villages, such as Peterstal, Alexandertal, Kleinliebental and Grossliebenthal, the largest of the German hamlets.
End this cultural tour at the Victory winery, based on one of the oldest German wine farms. Explore the various phases of wine production, before tasting local wine made according to German traditions in a restored wine cellar, built by the first German colonists.
