What to Expect
Spend a half day exploring the site of Monte Alban, a large pre-Columbian city in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca. Located in the central Oaxaca valley, Monte Alban was founded in 500 B.C. and was the region’s most important trade and social-political center for nearly 1,000 years.
Begin your guided journey at the top of the hill where the ruins stand 1,300 feet above the Oaxaca valley floor. The views of the surrounding area from the site are stunning.
Explore the large main plaza that’s surrounded by ancient structures and carved stone monuments, 2 large, raised platforms to the north and south, and impressive stone staircases.
