Hollókő Ethnographic Village: Day Tour from Budapest
Hollókő has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.The village's 67 protected buildings are characteristic peasant houses from the 17th-19th centuries, and the site is an outstanding example of a deliberately preserved traditional settlement. This village is a living example of rural life before the agricultural revolution of the 20th century. The 400 residents of this village are Palóc, and in addition to their special dialect, they retain their folk traditions, crafts, songs, and richly decorated, colorful folk costumes. On this full-day tour from Budapest you’ll be taken back in time to see how people lived in a rural village. Meet residents in Palóc costumes, see a folk dance, watch craftsmen at work, and visit the Village Museum and the Doll Museum. You’ll also taste some regional food made in the Palóc way, as the tour includes a stop for lunch. If you can arrange it, the best time to visit Hollókő is at Easter, when special programs and Easter traditions await! Sometimes colorful Palóc weddings are held as well.
