Experience the historic Ninna-ji Temple in Kyoto. Famous for its late-blooming Omuro sakura cherry trees and a five-story pagoda, Ninna-ji was founded in 888 AD. It is the main temple of the Omuro school of the Shingon sect of Buddhism, and it houses countless national treasures and cultural artifacts.


Appreciate the beauty of nature at Ninna-ji Temple throughout the year. Discover the striking beauty of the Omuro Pilgrimage course. This two-hour course is a shorter version of the Shikoku Pilgrimage, surrounded by the sounds of nature and the changing seasons. 


In spring, witness the late-blooming cherry blossoms. Summertime sees many priests in the temple for Buddhist ceremonies. In the fall, the historic temple buildings are enveloped in vivid shades of red and yellow. And in winter, enjoy the serene Japanese garden after it has snowed. 


You can even soak up the gorgeous snowy scenery of the Goten Palace.

Know before you go

  • The ticket booths close 30 minutes before the temple closes
  • Opening hours are from 9 AM to 5 PM from March to November, and from 9 AM to 4.30 PM from December to February
  • During the cherry blossom season, there is an admission fee required to enter the area after the Chumon inner gate to view the Omuro Sakura cherry blossoms
  • The admission fees collected will be used for the preservation of the Omuro Sakura
  • The period when the fee is required may vary depending on when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom
  • Those with a physical disability certificate get in for free (Only the person with the certificate), please ask at the ticket counter

The sites were incredible. But it wasn’t clear that the ticket was only for the one building just to the left as you enter. We went straight and saw the entire grounds and only realized that the majority of the site was free. We were ready to leave when we spied the temple. Also it was unclear when we scanned the QR code onsite to purchase the ticket that we needed the Get Your Guide app to access them. We had the app but others traveling with us didn’t.
