Join us on this tour of Central Park admiring the beautiful scenery and learning about the architectural brilliance of the park. You will be informed you on how the park has evolved over time to become the beautiful piece of landscape it is today.
What to Expect
Located in the heart of New York, lies Central Park; the green lungs of the urban metropolis. On this three hour tour, we will discover how this park has evolved along with its surrounding landscape since the 19th century. We will explore its design and history from its origins to the innovative conservation movement which saved it in the 1990s.
The park we see today is made up of 840 acres of rolling hills, stunning views and green spaces. Admire beautiful lakes and masterpieces displaying traditional American gothic architecture. Observe the architectural brilliance of the nineteenth century men who depict the ideas of democratic space and social responsibility. The designers, Frederic Law Olmstead and his associate Calvert Vaux spent twenty years designing and overseeing the construction of this work under a corrupt city government.
Learn about design theories behind the park, the juxtaposition of the 'beautiful’ and the 'picturesque’, as well as the social function of the park through history. Maintenance of the space and the designers’ ideals have proved a constant and costly battle, yet the park itself is of impeccable condition and is an oasis in the midst of the urban jungle. On your walk, you will see wonderful spaces and monuments taking in a century and a half of New York and American history in the process.
