What to Expect
Peel back multiple layers of NYC history on this 3-3.5-hour walking tour of the East Village, Nolita, and Little Italy. Discover a kaleidoscope of fascinating historical characters, immigrant waves, and neighborhood life, combined with great local tasting stops, and you’ll walk away with a new appreciation for what makes New York City one of the most diverse and vibrant cities in the world.

You begin near Astor Place in the East Village and learn a bit about two famous 19th century New Yorkers – John Jacob Astor and Peter Cooper. You then wind your way down one of the oldest roads in New York City named after a famous (or should that be infamous?) 17th century Dutch director-general with a wooden leg. Time-travel from Dutch farms to Little Ukraine, and along the way, you visit one of the last authentic Jewish bakeries in Lower Manhattan for a small tasty treat. You will follow that up with a well-deserved break at NY’s oldest Irish pub circa 1854. Tour participants will receive complimentary ale (half-pint of ale or soda), while admiring an amazing museum of beer and NYC lore.

After the memorable bar stop, head down to the Bowery to check out the former location of CBGB’s, the famous punk-rock venue that introduced the world to the Ramones, Blondie, Talking Heads, and many more acts. Then, cross into Nolita, formerly a southern-Italian enclave and now a trendy neighborhood full of boutiques, bars, and restaurants. This neighborhood is home to the old Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, which you will see and learn about. Your guide will also bring to light the change in the neighborhood over the last few decades – from a poor immigrant community to one of the trendiest areas in Manhattan today.

In the last segment of this walking tour, you’ll explore what’s left of Little Italy, while admiring some great street art and outdoor murals.  And what better way to wrap up than a tasty (and complimentary) stop at a 90-year-old family run Italian specialty store for some delicious and homemade mozzarella, along with fine imported prosciutto?

Meeting Point

The meeting point will be next to Starbucks at 13-25 Astor Place. Meet by the 8th street side of Starbucks, next to the bus stop. If you see the Starbucks logo hanging above you and the Kmart logo across the street, you are in the right place. If you don’t see Kmart, go around the corner to the other side of Starbucks. The best way to get there is to take the 6 to Astor Place (look for the Starbucks when you come out of the subway), or the R train to 8th street (when you get to Broadway and 8th, head east one block along 8th until you reach Starbucks).
