Next up, we'll journey to Jiufen, a charming mountain town steeped in history and mystery. Wander through its narrow alleyways, lined with traditional teahouses and lantern-lit shops. Don't forget to sample some of Jiufen's famous street snacks, from taro balls to fish balls! (Jiufen's stairs? Not for the faint of heart! But fear not, we've got other amazing tours. )

  • Starting January 1, 2025, Jiufen will enforce holiday traffic controls (8 AM–8 PM). Tour buses and private cars must park in designated lots, with visitors taking shuttle buses to Jiufen Old Street.
  • Please note that tour itineraries may vary due to weather conditions and traffic, ensuring your safety and enjoyment.
  • Jiufen Old Street: A fun maze for the adventurous, but a stair workout for others. Not a fan of stairs? No worries—we’ve got plenty of other great tours without the climb!

Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this tour. It was not worth the money (€406 for two people). We traveled in an old compact car, which was uncomfortable for over four hours. The guide showed us very little, said hardly anything, and his English was limited. The next disappointment came at Yehliu Geopark: he showed us the entrance, took a photo, and then left. We explored the rock formations on our own. After about an hour, we returned to the meeting point – no guide. After waiting for over 15 minutes, he arrived but went to the restroom first. In Jiufen, he pointed out the entrance to the shopping street as we drove past and then drove to the parking lot. We walked back down through the heavy traffic. The stalls offered the usual goods – cramped, crowded, nothing special. Again, just a photo as proof. In Shifen, the highlight was releasing sky lanterns. We were back at the hotel about two hours earlier than planned.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable and very informative day tour of areas north of Taipei with our guide Tony Kuo. All we had to do was sit back and enjoy the ride and at each stop we were treated to something interesting - the stone formations at the geo park, a beautiful waterfall, the lanes, tea houses and food stalls of Jiufen, lantern releases on the Pingxi rail line and a surprise stop at Kinkaseki POW Memorial Park.
